The Treasure of Friendship
By Pastor Timothy Burdick

I have been blessed with many wonderful people who have crossed my path and out of these a few have become life-long friends. In our culture today, friendship has become much too casual. Even among those of us who call ourselves Christians, the idea of commitment and wanting the best for the other person has almost vanished. The Bible runs counter to these cultural norms, however, so please look with me and see what it has to say:

God called Abraham His friend in James 2:23. Jonathan made a covenant with David to affirm their love and friendship. (1 Samuel 18:3). Jesus elevated friendship to its highest plane when He said, "No one has greater love (no one has shown stronger affection) than to lay down (give up) his own life for his friends” (John 15:13, Amplified).

If you are fortunate (blessed) enough to have a true friend, try and think of what is best for them. Laying down our lives can be done in small ways everyday by putting others first. So if God has blessed you in this way, don’t take those blessings for granted but hold them with an open, thankful hand.
